What is Service Electric High Speed Internet?

PenTeleData is a convenient, low-cost, toll-free Internet access service that gives you the best connections to the world's largest computer network: the Internet. Founded in 1994, PenTeleData, Incorporated, is a limited partnership of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York cable television and telephone companies pooling resources to offer you the latest technologies in the communications industry. Together, these companies enable PenTeleData to offer toll-free, unlimited Internet access over television cable at speeds up to 15 megabits (Mbps).

What is a cable modem?

    A cable modem is a device which allows high speed data access to the Internet via a cable TV (SECTV) network. A two way cable modem will typically have two connections, one to the cable wall outlet and the other to the computer.

How fast is a cable modem?

    At present, SECTV is using a Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem currently configured at speeds up to 25 Mbps for residential accounts.

How would a cable modem connect to my computer?

    Cable modems are connected to a computer via an ethernet (NIC) card. The Motorola Surfboard external cable modem requires a 10BaseT ethernet connection in the back of the computer. A 10/100/1000 BaseT ethernet card is also compatible.

What additional services are offered with a cable modem connection?

    A cable modem connection also provides you with 5 emails with 50MB of storage, 1 residential homepage with 1GB of storage, pop-up stopper, spam blocking, free Unleased WIFI powered by
PenTeleData at any of our hot spot locations and full technical support.

What are the main advantages of using cable modem service?

    First and foremost, the main advantage is the speed. With bi-directional access (two way) the customer is receiving speeds up to 25 Mbps and transmitting (sending) at speeds up to 1 Mbps. Also, a bi-directional cable modem has a constant connection to the Internet.

What is the customer responsible for supplying?

    The customer is responsible for purchasing and installing an ethernet card. The customer must have a cable connection installed for the cable modem. Also, an electrical outlet is required where the cable modem will be installed.

Can I purchase my own cable modem instead of renting one from Service Electric?

    Yes, as long as the cable modem is DOCSIS 2 or 3 compliant. There is no discount for customer owned modems.

Can my television and cable modem be in use simultaneously?

    Yes, both services can be used at the same time. The cable modem and cable television are programmed on different frequencies, and therefore do not interfere with each other.

Do online gaming consoles (such as X-Box 360, Playstation 3 and Wii U) work with Service Electric cable modem service?

    Console games should work using our High Speed Internet service, but that varies from console to console. Please contact the console manufacturer or refer to the user guide to find out what type of broadband connection is necessary for online console gaming.

Does Service Electric provide any technical support or setup information about online console gaming systems?

    Service Electric will not provide any technical support for online console systems. It is up to the customer to set up the console system to access the Internet. Any support issues should be addressed to the console manufacturer.

Are personal firewall programs supported/endorsed by Service Electric?

    Service Electric does not prohibit personal firewall programs, but there are no programs in particular which we endorse. It is also recommended that if a customer chooses to use a personal firewall program, its security setting is placed at a medium level as some have been known to block our servers from giving the computer an IP address.

Can more than 1 computer access the internet at the same time via the cable modem?

    Yes, the cable modem itself gives out 2 IP addresses. A residential account allows up to 5 computers to be online at once with the use of a Router, which the customer would provide.

Are routers supported using a cable modem from Service Electric?

    Service Electric technical support will be unable to provide help for that device if there is a troubleshooting issue and the router must be bypassed to verify if there is an issue with the router or the actual cable modem itself.

Is there a place where I can check your network status for outages?

    Yes, a network status page is provided by
PenTeleData that lists trouble tickets with current or scheduled outages and problems. You can click here to view currently opened trouble tickets. Keep in mind that this is only a list of PTD network problems and will not include any Service Electric outages, Service Electric related equipment problems or problems occuring within your home. Is there a bandwidth limit on my usage?

    Yes, there is a 250 GB (Gigabyte) limit per month. This includes both downloads and uploads combined. To put a 250 GB limit into perspective, to exceed this limit, you would have to do any of the following:

* Send 50 million e-mails (at 0.05 KB/e-mail)
* Download 62,500 song (at 4 MB/song)
* Download 125 standard-definition movies (at 2 GB/movie)
* Upload 25,000 hi-resolution digital photos (at 10 MB/photo)

The 250 GB Cap will be metered during the hours of 5:00 PM and 1:00 AM. After that time, all usage of internet will be unmetered.

When you reach 75% of the 250 GB limit, you will receive an e-mail notifying you of the status of your usage. In addition, the message will make you aware of the fact that Internet usage is not metered between the hours of 1:00 AM and 5 PM.

This policy applies to both residential and commercial accounts.

All usage over 250 GB will be billed at $1.00/GB.
